The purified chemicals or chemicals in purify grades to be central in this writing. But let’s find out a little bit about history of industrial chemicals.

First chemicals to be produced in large amounts through industrial process was sulfuric acid. In 1736, the pharmacist Joshua Ward developed a process for its production that involved heating saltpeter and allowing the sulfur to oxidize and combine with water. The first large-scale factory in Prestonpans in 1749 were established by John Roebuck and Samuel Garbett, used leaden condensing chambers for the manufacture of sulfuric acid.

In 19th century, there was an explosion in both the quantity of production and the variety of chemicals that were manufactured. Large chemical industries also took shape in Germany and later in the United States.

Today, chemical plants manufactured a wide range of chemicals including basic chemicals, organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, crop protection chemicals, biological substances, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, animal health products, vitamins. Chemicals can be applied in microbiology lab, plant tissue culture lab, molecular biology lab, testing food lab, aquaculture lab, HPLC lab, etc.

Purified chemicals are important for people’s work. Depending on the properties of research, testing, they decide to take level of purity. There are some levels that you can see as below:

a)      A.C.S. : A chemical grade of highest purity and meets or exceeds purity standards set by American Chemical Society (ACS).
b)     Reagent: High purity generally equal to A.C.S. grade and suitable for use in many laboratory and analytical applications.
c)      U.S.P. : A chemical grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP); acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use; may be used for most laboratory purposes.
d)     N.F. : A grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the United States National Formulary. (Since bought out and merged with the United States Pharmacopeia, USP-NF.)
e)      Lab: A chemical grade of relatively high quality with exact levels of impurities unknown; usually pure enough for educational applications. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.
f)       Purified: Also called pure or practical grade, and indicates good quality chemicals meeting no official standard; can be used in most cases for educational applications. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.
g)      Technical: Good quality chemical grade used for commercial and industrial purposes. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.
